Happy New Year to all and may 2019 bring you peace, prosperity, and success! The year will bring some neat new updates to the Outside and Substation LMS Curriculum.

First, all three years of both curriculums are now fully on the Blended Learning LMS system.  Substation year 3 was the last to be completed and just like the previous 5 years of content ( All 3 years of Outside and the first 2 years of Substation) was made available ahead of planned schedule.

Curriculum Year Date Turned On to LMS

Outside

1 September 30th, 2017
2 April 5th, 2018
3 October 15th, 2018

Substation

1 December 21st, 2017
2 July 2nd, 2018
3 December 29th, 2018

While we would all like to see that happen every time, with every project, it really takes a village to make things like that occur.  We are all so appreciative of the Outside Training Directors, the Outside Education Committee, and the Subject Matter Experts (SMEs), for their commitment and participation in supporting the ALLIANCE staff to complete this project.

Second, a new feature of the LMS was included that will update how each of the lessons within the Outside and Substation curriculum function.  This new feature places a minimum level of effort (a minimum score to achieve) by the student for them to access the review of a quiz.

It is the Quiz Review page that allows a student to see how they did on a quiz —

  • what they got right
  • what they got wrong
  • what all the correct answers are with solution notes where placed.

This page has always been a crucial key component of the LMS and our Blended Learning that provides just-in-time support to students. Once they have submitted an individual quiz, they can access the answers to better form their understanding prior to navigating to successive lessons and attending class/lab/practical time.  Prior to this new feature of the Outside and Substation curriculum, the LMS itself placed no minimum score to achieve for students to access the solutions to quiz questions.

This feature capability of the LMS was recently completed and has been incorporated into the Outside and Substation curriculum.

How it works

In order for a student to access the Quiz Review page the student must achieve a minimum 75% score on the quiz.  This aligns with the requirement of scoring 75% on each lesson in order to progress through the registered apprenticeship content.  Once a student achieves the minimum 75% they will be able to review any attempt of that lesson and identify the correct answers to questions missed.

When a student completes a quiz, if the score is 75% or greater, they will be presented with the Review page as normal and will be allowed to review every question of the quiz.  If the score is below 75% on the quiz, the following message will appear.

You have not met the minimum grade requirement (75%) for quizzes in this course and lesson.

The quiz navigation box will display which questions were answered correctly by color. [Green = Correct, Red = Incorrect] However, the student will not be able to access the questions due to the minimum of 75% not yet being achieved.

This feedback message also appears and the student will see their score:

Once the 75% or greater quiz score has been achieved, then the normal Quiz Review page is allowed, congratulations feedback is noted, and the student may review the entire quiz prior to moving on to the next quiz.  As per normal they will retain that review ability in order to study at a later date as well.

When the student returns to the lesson quiz to review at a later time they will see all of their attempts and may review any attempt in the list due to the one that met the minimum.

Cheers to a great New Year Year!
