Updates and additions for the 2017 Blended Learning curriculum and CLCS are nearing completion with many titles available now. Included in the new 2017 content are:
- Code courses are updated and available based on the 2017 NEC®
- NEC® Reference questions are being revised for use with the participant’s own keyboard
- Six topics where there were a large number of lessons and multiple test generator exams (example: DC Theory, Level I, 27 lessons and 4 section tests) have been realigned (or split) into single exam courses
- 2017, 1st year apprentices and instructors will see a title change for the Code content
The following information and more is also to be provided in an upcoming electrical training ALLIANCE bulletin.
NEC® Code Curriculum available based on the 2017 version
Courses are now available based on the 2017 NEC® and are also available based on the 2011 and 2014 versions.
To help identify the recommended Core versions available within the coming catalog, a clarifying message similar to the following will appear in the catalog that follows:
During an NEC® cycle year, we strive to adjust all of our materials to reflect the latest edition of the Code. We strategically “roll-out” the new curriculum based on our understanding of the material the student purchased in the prior year(s). For example, a 4th year student who has purchased a 2014 Code Calculations textbook is not expected to buy a 2017 Code Calculations textbook. To assist the Instructor, a supplement will be provided to address the area(s) of change in the Code. The supplement can be found in the Resources area of the electrical training ALLIANCE Blended Learning system.
NEC® Reference Questions to use participant’s device keyboard
Questions in the Blended Learning system where the participant is to cite the location in the NEC® an answer is supported or found, now uses a typed input from the participant’s own device keyboard. There is a help icon (question mark) next to the input box that when clicked will display question use directions.
Core and Advanced Course Realignment (Course Splits)
Preamble: The Job Information I, Level I, Based on the 2014 NEC – 3rd Edition course carries 6 Core credits, is comprised of 21 lessons and has 2 exam sections. The course is sectioned at the location where there is a test break. This occurs after lesson 10. The first 10 lessons make up the first exam and then lessons 11 through 21 make up the second exam.
New for 2017, each course topic similar to the Job Info course described above, where there were multiple exams within one title, was split into single-exam sized courses.
The outcome of splitting Job Information I, Level I, Based on the 2014 NEC – 3rd Edition:
The course was split at the location of the test break. Splitting this course into single exam courses made for two courses. The titles are:
Job Information 1, Level I, Based on the 2014 NEC, 4th Ed.
- Carries 3 Credits
- Covers lessons 1-10 of the original course
- Lessons are numbered 1-10
- Exam covers lessons 1-10
Job Information 2, Level I, Based on the 2014 NEC, 4th Ed
- Carries 3 Credits
- Covers lessons 11-21 of the original course
- Lessons are numbered 1-10
- Exam covers lessons 1-10
For 2017 versions, the titles are:
- Job Information 1, Level I, Based on the 2017 NEC and
- Job Information 2, Level I, Based on the 2017 NEC
Topics where updates were needed to split courses into single exam topics are:
- DC Theory
- AC Theory
- Code and Practices 2
- Motors
- Lighting Essentials

NEC® Code Course Title Changes for 2017 1st Year Apprentices
New for 2017, 1st year apprentices are two new Code course titles to be used across the apprenticeship.
- Code, Standards, and Practices and Electrical Code Calculations.
The rollout for the use of the new titles starts this year (2017) with the 1st year class and only a change of the course title Code and Practices 1 to Code, Standards, and Practices 1.
As this 2017, 1st year group progresses through the apprenticeship, additional levels (all displayed in this presentation) will be added for enrollment.
- The addition of the term Standards more closely aligns the content with what is covered and needed.
- Future courses seen by these apprentices will include a change in the Code Calculations titles to Electrical Code Calculations.
Recommended Code Course Delivery
All 2017, 2nd through 5th year apprentices will continue to use the Code and Practices and Code Calculation titles for their Code curriculum. The following image (click to expand) displays the recommended Code topic delivery order.
