The development teams and etA staff have been working to resolve the recent 522 errors that users have been experiencing during the busy usage times of the day. After Labor Day, system usage numbers have set new records for the number of users per day and concurrently. The system itself is working pretty effortlessly to handle the traffic as it was built to exceed current and relative future numbers for use of the system. The issue causing the poor performance has been located and it relates to some of the SCORM packages on the system.
Shareable Content Object Reference Model (SCORM) is an XML-based framework used to define and access information about learning objects so they can be easily shared among different learning management systems (LMSs).
These packages contain things like media clips, interactive animations, and interactive simulations. Not all SCOs (as we call them) are causing issue. Some however, are. The SCOs causing the issue were built in a popular and normal format for their time, but now are in need of replacement. We are carefully reviewing each of the well over 4,000 instances of these items to identify which need to be replaced, pulled, or closed. We have actually been doing this for quite sometime, but due to some browser configuration default changes, we are revising some tactics.
Many of these items will and have already returned as often times they are video that we can place within Vimeo. Others, may need to be reviewed by the SME (pronounced smee or said as S. M. E.; which all means Subject Matter Expert) for their input on the need.
The LMS Instructor course is one area that is full of these items that require a rebuild. In the absence of this course we still have loads of information to explain what Blended Learning is, what an LMS is, and where all of the resources are. We also have Lynda.com courses for updating computer skills if those are desired. Most important, here is a link to this area of the Blended Learning Blog that houses a dozen items that are current, kept current and very important to the understanding of the LMS:
We are very sorry for the inconvenience the 522 errors have caused. We monitor the system for all things about its use and have been hard at it trying to identify and eradicate this issue for you and your users of the system. While we have pulled down the items that were causing the symptoms, we will, as always, continue to track the system for concerns.
